Unclaimed benefits

Billions of pounds worth of welfare benefits are left unclaimed each year. Are you sure you are not missing out on any benefits you are entitled to?  You can check your benefit entitlement yourself by using the Turn2us website.

Bank accounts

These days it is more and more difficult to manage our lives without access to a bank account.  For more information on opening a bank account go to the Directgov website.

Credit Unions offer many of the services of a bank and just like a bank they are regulated by the Financial Services Authority (the UK's financial services regulator).  But Credit Unions are cooperatives owned by their members, not shareholders.  The Scottish League of Credit Unions hold a list of credit unions operating in Scotland.

Debts and money management

• Money Made Clear website is produced by the UK's Consumer Financial Education Body to offer impartial information and tools to help you with all your financial affairs
• National Debtline provides free confidential and independent advice on how to deal with debt problems
• Money a+e is an independent website providing straightforward money advice
