Community Fund Project in:
We funded £2,000 to the Highland Community Care Forum to run their drop in centre at the Mackenzie Centre in Inverness in partnership with the NHS. The purpose of the centre is to support unpaid carers by giving them time off from caring. Unpaid carers, of which there are an estimated 29,000 in the Highland area, will be able to book their loved one into the centre to be looked after by trained staff. This will give carers a much needed break to do some shopping, attend appointments or meet with friends.
The project has a number of other aims. These include signposting carers to other services that they may not be aware of, carrying out IT training to carers to improve their skills and confidence and providing budget Highlife membership cards to carers who provide unpaid care for more than 35 hours a week.
The centre aims to bring people together, reduce loneliness and provide respite. Through this service they hope to enhance the quality of carers’ lives and improve their wellbeing.
