A new accessibility solution at a Cairn Housing Association retirement court in Bathgate has transformed life for one resident who was previously largely housebound.
The FlexStep was installed at Royal Scot Court earlier this summer following successful grant funding from the Scottish Government. The innovative system functions as ordinary steps but can transform into a platform lift, providing easier access for wheelchair users and people with mobility needs.
The court was not fully accessible, with around five steps separating residents from their flats and the rest of the court, including the communal lounge and outdoor areas.
For Alice McCulloch, who has lived at Royal Scot Court for almost 25 years, the FlexStep has made a life-changing difference.
Alice’s mobility has declined significantly over recent years, leaving her largely unable to leave her flat. Her daughter also lives at Royal Scot Court, but Alice was unable to visit her. When her son needed to take her out of her flat, it was a complicated process involving two wheelchairs positioned at different ends of the court.
The FlexStep has changed all that. Alice can now leave her flat independently, visit her daughter and spend time in the communal lounge with her neighbours. She has also been able to attend appointments and enjoy a greater sense of freedom and independence.
Alice said:
“I want to say what a boon the FlexStep has been for me since it was installed. It is now so much easier for me to visit my friends without getting stressed at having to use normal steps. Thank you!”
The difference is particularly significant as Christmas approaches. Last Christmas, Alice’s dinner had to be taken to her flat. This year, she is looking forward to joining the other residents in the communal lounge and celebrating together.

The FlexStep has also benefited other residents at Royal Scot Court, making it easier for them to move between their homes and the wider communal areas of the court.
The project forms part of Cairn’s commitment to creating homes and communities that meet the changing needs of its tenants and support people to live independently for as long as possible.
